<p>Seiring berkembangnya ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi mikroskop, para ilmuwan menemukan <code>kromosom</code> di dalam <code>nukleus</code>. Penemuan gen sebagai unit pembawa sifat di dalam kromosom memunculkan postulat modern bahwa sel juga berperan sebagai unit <code>hereditas</code> (pewarisan sifat) dari satu generasi ke generasi berikutnya.</p>

Dengan mikroskop sederhananya, dia mengamati sayatan gabus mati dan menemukan deretan ruang-ruang kosong menyerupai kotak kecil, yang kemudian dia sebut <code>cellulae</code> (sel).</p>

<p>Ilmuwan Belanda yang pertama kali mengamati sel hidup. Menggunakan mikroskop lensa tunggal buatannya untuk mengamati air rendaman jerami, dia menemukan organisme bersel tunggal yang bergerak (bakteri dan protozoa), yang saat itu dia sebut sebagai <code>&quot;animalcules&quot;</code>.</p>
